Silver Arrow - Helping Others - Home Safety

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

Task 1: Make a list or infographics describing the common causes of accidents at home and how to prevent them.

Common Accidents and how to prevent them

Falling objects

Make sure electrical cables, tablecloth edges and dish towels are out of reach in order to help prevent objects from falling if young children reach out for them.

Trips and Falls

A fall can affect people of all ages, but common amongst the very young and the very old. Make sure the floor is not slippery, quickly wipe dry any spilled liquid and keep area outside toilets dry after the shower.

Cuts

Sharp edges could cause cuts. Make sure the sharp edges are properly protected. If there is a cut means that there will be some blood. Apply pressure to stop the bleeding and apply an antiseptic to the area. Assessing the situation is important, but if the blood stops following pressure, it is likely to be a minor cut that will not need stitches.

Burns

Hot drinks can also cause most burns and scalds to children under the age of five. Children should be kept a safe distance away from open fires, cookers, irons, hair straighteners and matches, as these can be dangerous. Any burn should be held under cold running water for ten minutes and then assessed. Having a clean plastic bag or cling film in your first aid kit can be an ideal way to cover burns to keep them clean and help them to heal.

Choking

Don’t leave small objects or toys laying around. Children have a fascination with putting objects in their mouth and swallowing them, meaning that choking is a common hazard. If you cannot dislodge the object promptly, then call 999 immediately.

Poisoning

Keep medicine, household product and cosmetics out of reach of children as these may poison children if accidentally drank.

It is best to not leave young children unattended as this could easily result in a home accident. Remember, prevention is always better than cure. By taking simple precautions and being mindful of potential hazards, you can create a safe environment for yourself and your loved ones at home.

Task 2: Teach others about home safety through a game

Can you spot what is NOT safe in this house?

This is what a safe house looks like.
